Australia has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Early detection of skin cancer is the best prevention.
Our skin cancer doctors perform comprehensive, full body skin checks. Skin spots can appear anywhere on the body and a thorough skin check involves getting undressed down to your underwear. This enables the doctor to perform a full skin examination, checking for sunspots or other skin cancer concerns. Our purpose-built consultation rooms offer privacy curtains and modesty sheets for your comfort. During your skin check it is important to point out to your GP if you have noticed any changing, sore, abnormal, or new skin spots.
The doctors at Brisbane City Skin Clinic use a dermatoscope to magnify and illuminate any skin spots or moles. This is to check for any abnormal features, colour, border or pigmentation.
The doctor will also ask you for your family medical history, your individual medical history, ask questions in regards to your lifetime sun exposure and what you currently do to help protect your skin from sun exposure. At the end of the consultation they will recommend how often you should follow up for a skin check based on your history, exposure, risk and in accordance with the current best practice guidelines.
If any suspicious lesions are identified during the skin check, and if time permits and you are agreeable, a biopsy may be performed at the same appointment. Alternatively the doctor will ask you to make a subsequent booking. Biopsies are sent for histology examination and the results are generally received within 3 business days. You will be contacted and advised of your results by either our nurse or the doctor.
A full skin check appointment at Brisbane City Skin Clinic is 30 minutes.
