To formally identify a skin cancer and determine the appropriate course of treatment, this generally involves a surgical procedure performed by a trained skin cancer doctor. This simple, quick procedure (usually within 30 minutes) is performed under local anaesthetic only (numbing injection) at the clinic. Brisbane City Skin Clinic has a comfortable and well-equipped clinical treatment room with Registered Nurse support. The skin cancer doctors will discuss the procedure with you, including the type of procedure, post-operative care, recovery time and outcomes pending the result. If the spot is in an area that you are cosmetically/visually concerned about, ie on your face, then the skin cancer doctors can refer you to a Plastic Surgeon to have this procedure performed.
Different procedure methods are used depending on the size, type and location of the suspected skin cancer, and could involve one of the following:
- Shave biopsy
- Punch biopsy
- Excisional biopsy
- Wide ellipse excision
- Curettage and cautery
After the procedure is performed the lesions are sent for histology examination where a pathologist determines the type of lesion (non-malignant, BCC (basal cell carcinoma), SCC (squamous cell carcinoma), melanoma and many others in between). The result will determine the next course of action. Sometimes this will involve an additional procedure at the clinic or referral to a Dermatologist or Plastic Surgeon. The doctor generally has your results within 3 business days. You will be notified of your result by either the nurse or doctor.
Your doctor will inform you of the time required to perform the procedure and you can book this in with our receptionist. These bookings do need to be made either over the phone or in person to ensure our treatment room facilities are available. Full payment is required for the skin procedure and generally, you will out of pocket approximately $100 after your Medicare rebate. Our receptionists can provide you with more information on fees and Medicare rebates.
