If you have a particular skin spot or mole that you have only just noticed or one that is causing you particular concern, you can see one a skin cancer doctor at Brisbane City Skin Clinic to just get that spot or mole checked, particularly if you have only recently had a full skin check and are not yet due another. You can elect to have a shorter – 15 minute – appointment for a spot check only.
We all have skin spots and moles, but getting to know what could be a skin cancer and what signs to look out for is important. Skin spots can change, and new skin spots appear throughout our lives.
Learn the signs of abnormal spots that may indicate early skin cancer. Lookout for:
- any crusty, painful, sore, or non-healing spots
- small lumps that are red, pale or pearly in colour
- new spots and freckles or moles that are changing
- take note of colour, thickness, size or shape of skin spots
If the doctor identifies that the lesion is suspicious, they may suggest a biopsy of this spot at the same time of the consultation. If it is identified that a full excision is required you may be asked to book a subsequent appointment to allow for the appropriate amount of time and to ensure the treatment room facilities and Registered Nurse are available. If the spot is in an area that you are cosmetically/visually concerned about, ie on your face, then the skin cancer doctors can refer you to a Plastic Surgeon.
If the lesion is biopsied or excised it will be sent for histology examination. The doctor generally has your results within 3 business days. You will be notified of your result by either the nurse or doctor.
